The 9/11 memorial stair climb comes to the Galleria on September 12

Most of what happens in Hoover happens somewhere else in Hoover. This one is in our back yard.

On Saturday, September 12, the City of Hoover joins the Hoover Police and Fire departments for a remembrance ceremony and Memorial Stair Climb at the Riverchase Galleria, marking the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001. The ceremony begins at 9 a.m. in the Riverchase Galleria Food Court, and the stair climb follows immediately in the Galleria Towers (City of Hoover).

The climb is the equivalent of 110 stories, representing the height of the World Trade Center towers. Proceeds benefit the Hoover Public Safety Charity Foundation (City of Hoover).

A few practical notes, all from the city’s announcement:

• The ceremony is open to the public and no ticket is required to attend it.
• Registration is required only for those participating in the climb, and a T-shirt is included with climb registration. Shirts will also be available for purchase at the event.
• If you would rather not climb but want to support the event, the registration page has a donation ticket option.
• The city lists Hoover Fire Headquarters at 205-444-7655 for additional information.

If you live in Riverchase, plan for more traffic than a normal Saturday morning around the mall and the towers. We will be there.

New since we last wrote about the fall calendar

We covered most of Hoover’s fall dates in our rundown of what has opened and closed near Riverchase. Two of those items now have details that matter to us specifically.

Taste of Hoover is Thursday, October 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Aldridge Gardens. Parking is available in the Aldridge Gardens lot, and the city says additional shuttle parking will be offered from the bottom of the Trader Joe’s parking lot in the Riverchase Shopping Center at Highway 31 and Lorna Road. That is our shopping center, so expect the lot to be busier than usual that evening. Tickets are on sale now, and the announced lineup already runs to more than two dozen food providers plus five beverage providers (City of Hoover). Regular free admission to Aldridge Gardens is suspended during the event.

The first Mayor’s Ball, “A Heart for the Arts,” is Saturday, October 17 at the Hyatt Regency-The Wynfrey Hotel, with doors opening at 6 p.m. for a cocktail hour. Individual tickets are scheduled to go on sale September 3rd through a link the city says it will post closer to that date. Table sponsorships are listed at $25,000, $15,000 and $10,000, each including a table for 10 and advertising on event media. Proceeds support the Hoover Arts Foundation (City of Hoover).

Two more dates on the city’s calendar, unchanged from what we reported: free Community Shred Day is 8 a.m. to noon Friday, September 18 in the Hoover Public Library parking lot at 200 Municipal Drive, limited to six banker-sized boxes (City of Hoover), and the 63rd Annual Bluff Park Art Show is Saturday, October 3, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Bluff Park Community Park, 517 Cloudland Drive (City of Hoover).
